Internship Breeding strategy optimization

Are you fascinated by genetics, do you enjoy analyzing data, and do you like programming algorithms and scripts? If so, apply for this internship on breeding strategy optimization at our office in Fijnaart.
The internship  Breeding strategy optimization at Rijk Zwaan
QTL mapping is common practice within breeding companies to find markers linked to traits. Depending on the crop, the nature of the trait and the goal that needs to be achieved, a variety of mapping strategies is usually possible. As it is not always clear which mapping strategy is the most optimal strategy (scientifically in terms of statistical power and LD-decay, from a business perspective in time and money spent), this internship focuses on obtaining some answers to the questions that frequently arise when a mapping project is initiated. Work should include a literature search but will focus practically on simulating data using open source as well as proprietary developed software (R-scripts). By studying variations in the type of population (DH, F2, RIL), the size of the population, the number of markers analyzed, and the nature of the trait (mono- or polygenic with varying levels of heritability), a (generalized) strategy for different scenarios should be obtained. Next to this decision tree, the final result should also include guidelines on when classical mapping strategies should be superseded by alternative breeding strategies such as genomic selection.
The internship will be within the team of Quantitative Genetics, currently consisting of a group of ten people that get enthusiastic about statistics, genetics and data analysis in general. Every day we are putting our statistical knowledge into practice for breeding by analyzing data and by interacting and communicating with the different research and breeding departments in various ways. For statistical analyses we mainly use R, we are therefore looking for students that have (basic) proficiency in programming.
We are seeking a trainee Breeding strategy optimization with:
- Currently following a Master education in the area of Biology, Plant Breeding, or Biostatistics
- An interest in genetics
- Experience with working with R
- An availability for 5-6 months, 32-38 hours a week
- Period is negotiable

We strive to respond to you within 2 weeks of receiving your application. If we see opportunities, we will arrange an interview for you with an internship supervisor. We will also discuss your internship allowance during this interview.
