How does your job as Specialist Molecular Breeding at Rijk Zwaan looks like?


The Specialist Molecular Breeding in the Cucumber Breeding Department is an essential role in breeding cucumbers. In this job you focus on marker assisted breeding whereby you are responsible for using molecular markers and breeding software in such a way that you reach your goal (a parent line with a new trait) as efficient as possible. In this process you collaborate intensively with your practical assistant, various cucumber breeders both nationally as internationally, the prebreeding team, the coordinator planning and logistics, specialists molecular breeding of other crop breeding departments and software developers. Also you will be working hands-on in the greenhouse with complex marker assisted backcross projects. More specifically, you will be working on amongst other things:

  • The implementation, optimization and maintenance of breeding software
  • The design and execution of marker assisted backcross breeding programs including the involved administrative steps

Your contribution:


You are a team player, strong in communication with a proactive mindset and a practical approach. You work well structured, you enjoy streamlining processes and you like to take the initiative in this respect.  In addition, we can find the following on your resume:

  • At least a completed HBO (Bachelor)level education, preferably in the field of breeding, molecular biology or (plant) genetics
  • Affinity with software applications
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Mastering the Dutch language is a pré

As Specialist Molecular Breeding you will be part of the Cucumber Breeding Department. The department consists of a motivated team of more than 45 colleagues (more than 60 worldwide) working on a daily basis in our breeding programs with the goal to develop the best cucumber cultivars.
